Reggie Pulvirent
Reggie, a five and a half year breast cancer survivor,
attributes much of her successful recovery to complementary medicine and an
optimistic mindset. Though she opted to
proceed with a mastectomy and chemotherapy when she was diagnosed with invasive
ductal carcinoma in October 2000, Reggie combined these conventional treatments
with traditional Chinese medicine. She
received acupuncture, massage, and homeopathic remedies for a full year after
diagnosis, and accredits much of her wellbeing to these therapies.
Although Reggie chose not to work for several months as she
recovered from both her surgery and chemotherapy, she evaded depression and
isolation by welcoming the support of friends and family, as well as attending
an American Cancer Society-sponsored breast cancer support group. She also dedicated time to meditation,
fostering the strong spirituality that she also considers vital to her
wellbeing.
Though Reggie’s illness occurred in a single area, she made
an immediate decision to treat her entire body and mind as one, a choice that
she believes has been essential to her successful recovery. She remains grateful for her health and
intends to begin volunteer work upon retirement, emphasizing her belief that
giving enriches life.
