Christian, a 2004 graduate of Fairfield
University, combined his academic success with athletics and was a three-year
Division I Varsity swimmer. His accomplishments are all the more impressive
considering his starting point. When Christian swam his first race as a
sophomore at Fairfield, it was also his first competitive swim race ever! In
three years, Christian went from not being able to complete a race to becoming a
recognized leader on his team and a competitive athlete in his conference.
Christian also began a career as a competitive triathlete during
college. At age 19, he completed his first Half Ironman. He cites his 2005 15th
place finish at the internationally competitive Escape from Alcatraz Triathlon
and his win at the local Terramuggas Sprint Triathlon as his two most satisfying
races. During NBC's coverage of the 2005 Ford New York City triathlon, Christian
was interviewed while biking his way to a first place finish in his age group.
During his senior year at Fairfield University, Christian began working
for Zama Training, a small multi-sport coaching business. For two years, he has
coached individual clients and developed and implemented workshops on swimming
technique and endurance training.
Building on his academic training and
experiences as a tutor, camp counselor, college Resident Advisor and coach,
Christian joined the faculty of Fairfield Preparatory School in Fairfield,
Connecticut in 2004. He teaches freshman and senior English classes, coaches
cross country and swimming, and is involved in the school's service, development
and spiritual programs. In the classroom, in the quad, or on the cross-country
course, his students refer to him by the simple but identifiable moniker of
"Mac".
This past summer Christian was asked to help with the Connecticut
Challenge, a bike ride to benefit cancer survivorship. The cancer survivors with
whom Christian met and worked inspired him to organize Coast to Coast: A Run
for Survivorship and to accept the personal challenge of running across the
United States to raise money for cancer survivorship.
