Coast to Coast :: A Run for Survivorship

Linda Barrett
When Linda was diagnosed with stage III breast cancer in 1996, she was faced with an inevitable mastectomy and chemotherapy regimen. Due to the advanced stage at which her cancer was detected, Linda was given one week to digest the news of her illness and decide whether she would follow her mastectomy with reconstructive surgery. While the cosmetic aspect of breast cancer surgery often takes a backseat to the life-saving effects that the procedure can yield, it is a very real, serious, and life-altering aspect of women's lives. As Linda weighed her options, she found great support in an aunt who had been faced with the same decision. Talking with someone close to her who understood the physical and emotional implications of a mastectomy was a great comfort, and eventually led her to her decision to forego reconstructive surgery. With the support of her family Linda was able to maintain a positive mindset, and remained strong through both her surgery and chemotherapy. After 10 cancer-free years, she continues to emphasize that there is always hope, and that even the worst situations can be overcome.
